For those who have express an interest in viewing the political model in
a new light, I give you the Nolan Chart.  This chart is used to replace
the traditional left-right wing model to provide a better understanding
of the differences between political parties and ideologies.  I thank
Ken Wiebe of the Liberal BBS in Victoria for putting it together.

SOCIAL FREEDOMS, often called 'civil liberties', consists of things like
censorship, gun control, sexual conduct, freedom of communication, drug
legalization, tolerance of behavioural diversity.

ECONOMIC FREEDOMS consists of things like low taxation,
unregulated free market economy. Tolerance of economic diversity.


The chart can be further divided into the 'four continents' of the
political world: conservative, interventionist, liberal and libertarian.

*  Liberals generally advocate economic encroachment and civil liberty.

*  Conservatives generally advocate economic liberty and civil
   encoachment.

*  Interventionists advocate both economic and civil encoachment.

*  Libertarians advocate both economic and civil liberty.
