Taxation is Theft

What is the difference between taxation and theft? "Not much!", says BC Libertarian Party Leader Ken Wiebe.

"The word "tax" isn't even defined in any BC legislation.", said Wiebe. "I suspect the reason it isn't defined is because it would fit well within the legal definition of theft."

"Theft is taking the possessions of another against their will. You could argue that people pay taxes willingly, for some social good, but then, why use or at least, threaten to use the force inherent in fines and jail? Introducing threats of force against the citizens transforms normal funding of government into theft."

"There is no reason why government cannot act like any other provider of services, by offering the service and letting the people decide for his or her self. Each citizen will be at liberty to fund only those ministries and services which he supports and agrees with. That is the most democratic method of providing funding to government and avoiding social strife."

Wiebe said the government should make taxation a matter of choice, or take the more practical approach and charge directly for the services it offers. "The government currently offers many valued services, there should be no difficulty about allowing freedom of choice with respect to the services each citizen prefers."

Wiebe believes that most people will choose the government services, but having private options will create competitive pressures to keep the cost of these government programs down and quality high.

"We are in favour of making government accountable by opening it up to competition by removing its legislated monopolisitic elements. A bit of competition for your tax money would encourage honesty, thrift, and efficiency in government... just as it does in other organizations within society. Most importantly, we are talking about removing the threat of violence inherent in taxation and restoring the trust of citizens in our government."
